I used to spend so much money on those little car air fresheners that you stick inside the vent. They are really expensive as they don’t last nearly as long as they say they will. I have bought just about every kind from the generic ones at the auto parts store to the pool, new Febreze ones they started selling at the grocery store. None of them work! I thought I would eventually find some that do the job so I just kept blowing money. Silly me…
Once we turned over to the all-natural everything, I got frustrated because all I had to make the car smell fresh was to use a drop or two of lavender or grapefruit essential oil on the floor carpets. Those are two of my very favorites. I also have this owl hanging air freshener from Natural Life that doesn’t have smell anymore. I would add some drops on there and leave it hanging. Still not enough!
I thought for a while that there must be something out there I can use to make an all-natural car air freshener that would actually work and be long-lasting. That’s when I decided to make some Clothespin Car Air Fresheners.
I finally had a great idea! With all the random stuff I have laying around in my craft studio, I was bound to find something that would just about do the trick. I grabbed some clothes pins and pom-poms. I glued the pom-poms at the ends of the clips. You can paint the clothespins if you like; We went for the simple look. Plus, right now we are pretty much in love with the look of pine or light wood.
With good old clip on wooden clothes pins that I picked up at Dollar Tree, I was fine without a touch of color. I picked red and black pom-poms to match the look of our car. Once you’re done, clip it to the AC vents and drop a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the pom-pom. BAM! And there you have it, all-natural homemade Clothespin Car Air Fresheners.
We like to alternate scents according to season or current obsessions. Right now, we are totally obsessed with white pine essential oil from Eden’s Garden.
We absolutely love the paint color of our car. It’s black but there’s red glitter embedded in the color. Also, the entire interior is black and the lights on the dash board and radio are bright red. We are definitely the black on black on black kind of family with the standard hint of red. This is a fun little DIY craft activity that can be done with kids, too.
If you have a larger SUV or van— as we dream of having one day— you can let the kids pick their desired color of pom-pom and even paint the clothespin themselves and attach it to the AC vent closest to them in the backseat. They can even pick their own fragrances. You can, too!

- Pom-poms
- Hot glue gun
- Essential oil, of choice
- Acrylic paint
- Connect your glue gun.
- Add a drop of glue to the pom-pom and adhere it to the open end of the clothespin. Repeat until out of supplies.
- To use, add a few drops of essential oil on the pom-pom and clip the clothespin to your car air vent.
